Gateshead Food Festival
Summer food fun in Gateshead Town Centre
August 2nd was a beautiful day in Gateshead town centre: Gateshead Food Festival was a great success! The sun was shining, food was cooking, and folk were dancing. It was great to see people from all ages and backgrounds, local and from further afield, celebrating good food in Gateshead.
At our Gateshead Food Partnership area near the high level bridge, we had a tombola, quizzes, making Latin American fruit salads, a pickling workshop, tastes of tea from around the world with locally grown plants, creative banner making, and we gave out early apples and other locally grown produce, plants, and seeds. Celebrating and showcasing some amazing organisations in Gateshead: Hope Beyond Borders, Gibside Community Farm, Nourish the Wild and The Hop Garden, The Bank Chopwell, The Comfrey Project, and St Chad's Community Project. We had lots of encounters and conversations with people interested in joining the good food movement in Gateshead.
Then at the Railway Quarter arches we had the brilliant Anthony O’Shaughnessy leading a cookery theatre with local businesses and Gwen from Gateshead Council’s Brighten The Day did a demo about cooking with children and young people. And of course, the Community Cook Off! Organised by Gateshead Council’s Community Safety team and Northumbria Police in partnership, 12 community groups battled each other cooking on their own BBQs, using ingredients freshly picked from Gibside Community Farm . The food they made looked delicious and they all had a great time.

Thank you so much to all who made it happen and all who came along!
